After a gruelling trip in a goods wagon lasting three days and three nights, Anne and the others arrived at the concentration and extermination camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Men and women were separated on the platform. Anne, Margot, Edith and Auguste van Pels ended up in barracks in the women's camp. Life in the camp was hell, and death was always around the corner. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who had to go into hiding to escape from the Nazis. While she was in hiding she wrote a diary, which would later become world-famous. After Anne was discovered and arrested she couldn’t write anymore, so we don’t know what she felt, thought and experienced. But we do know a lot about this period, based on eyewitness accounts and documents. On 4 August 1944 the police arrested Anne and the others in hiding with her. First they were taken to prison and then they ended up in the Westerbork transit camp. During the night of 2-3 September 1944 a long list of names was read out, including those of the group who had been in hiding.
